This was only my second time staying in a hostel, ever, and it was quite nice although I would have preferred a regular ol hotel if I had a choice (booked by my travel partner, not me). I will say that I was concerned about the location, having never really spent much time in chinatown, however it was a good location- easy to find, and not really very far off the main strip. The staff were very kind and helpful, I loved their board in the common room that listed all the activities the hostel was doing the next week or two. We did not participate in any since we were only there one night, but there were alot of hikes, bar crawls, etc. We got a room with 6 beds (all taken except 1) right across from the front desk which suited us fine. They were having a drinking game that night until midnight, but we were both so pooped we didn't really hear much. I kept waking up due to the street noise, but I am not very used to that kind of thing as I live in the country. Just the usuals- garbage pickup, kids playing with firecrackers, car horns, police sirens... Our entire floor only had 1 bathroom with 2 showers and 1 toilet which I was kind of worried about, but I never had to wait on the toilet so it didn't matter in the least. The other guests were all very sweet, it was nice to chat with a few in the morning while we were eating breakfast- seeing what everyone had planned for their day. The hostel is also within walking distance of the financial district & the embarcadero- great if you want a fancy dinner or drinks with a view of the bay. We took a cab back from the embarcadero after dinner & the ride was less than $10... I would stay here again if I was travelling by myself (I felt quite safe here) or on a strict budget.
