Rainbow Lights Art Installation in the Castro (Nov. 16-18th)
Date:
Saturday 18 Nov 2017
Meeting time:
5:30pm
Meeting Place:
The Castro- main plaza
The Castro is San Francisco's famous 'gayborhood' and is usually known for its crazy parties, anything goes attitude, and rainbows everywhere. It's easy to forget amidst the smiles and fun that the reason the neighborhood is the way it is today is many years of fighting for equal rights. Everyone from ordinary people to LGBT activists played a part in changing the minds of San Francisco citizens and city officials to ensure LGBT people everywhere- not just SF- were protected. One of the most well known activists was Harvey Milk, the first openly gay person elected to public office. in 1977, who was later murdered in City Hall not even a year into power. To honor Milk and celebrate the 40th anniversary of his historic election to the S.F. Board of Supervisors, the SF arts nonprofit Illuminate have created Harvey's Halo, a rainbow light sculpture honoring his vision of equality and as a symbol of hope and peace. These are the same people behind The Bay Lights and the illumination of the Conservatory of Flowers for the 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love, so there's no doubt it's going to be beautiful. There will also be the unveiling of “Hope Will Never Be Silent” – a permanent neon art installation on the old Bank of America building at Castro and Market – a message to forever great all who come to the Castro with the immortal words of Harvey Milk. The foggier it is the better the lights look, which is perfect for SF! The art installation will offiially open with a kickoff at 6pm on Nov. 8th complete with speakers and performers. Note: This installation/ the lights will run dusk to midnight, November 8, 9, 10, 11 and November 16, 17, 18.
