When spring steps in Japan, the Japanese American community starts the celebration of the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival, this year on two consecutive weekend: April 12 - 13 and April 19 - 20 at Japantown in San Francisco.
Featuring the arts and tradition of the Japanese culture:
Kanda Myojin Purification Ceremony - held on the Saturday before the parade
Grand Parade - performance on the street of the Japanese classical and folk dance, marching troops, colorful floats with the Festivals Queen, Taiko drum beating, carrying of Taru Mikoshi during the parade which begins at the Civic Center and ends in Japantown
Kayo Parade - starts at 12pm on April 13, highliting the festival by showcasing singers and classical dance performers
Taiko - drum playing which was considered instrument to ward evil spirits and brought rain during drought and now a popular native art
Taru Mikoshi - Japanese tradition preservation in San Francisco by inviting strong able-person to carry it down the streets during the finale of the Grand Parade
Queen Program - more like an old-fashioned pageant for young women
Chanoyu - tea ceremony
Ikebana - the art of flower arrangement
Senior Brunch - a tribute honoring a special group of seniors on April 22
Sanrio Hello Kitty - games, diy crafts, and more fun
