If you're looking for the quintessential "San Francisco" event to tell all your friends you went to, the How Weird Street Fair is it. Every year on the first weekend of May, San Francisco's Howard Street transforms into a day-long outdoor costume party and celebration of all things, well, weird. (Howard = How Weird! Get it?!) Eight blocks are sectioned off to make room for live music performances, dancing, food vendors, and thousands of costumed San Franciscans. Not only are costumes encouraged, but the website says they're actually required. The How Weird Street Faire has a different theme every year, and this year it's the 80s. Come dressed in costumes inspired by either the 1880s or 1980s. This celebration of all things weird begins at noon and ends at 8 p.m. Please note: tickets are $15, so although this is not the most backpacker budget-friendly event on our calendar, it's a San Francisco classic, and worth checking out if you're not yet at the point in your travels where you're trying to turn a baguette and a block of cheese into three meals. We know. We've been there.
